Symphony X is a great progressive metal band that is quite unfairly perceived as Dream Theater's poor cousin. Though geographically close in origin, their music is quite different. And unfair because their ranks include powerhouse vocalist Russell Allen alongside the musical mastermind, guitarist Michael Romeo, who can match up favourably to their counterparts in any other progressive metal band. The only reason I could imagine why they don't have a bigger profile in the metal world today, is that they lacked adequate marketing and promotion from the start. The compositions and performances especially on the string of albums starting from Divine Wings to Paradise Lost, ranges from very good to brilliant and Michael Romeo, often overlooked as a YJM clone, has technique and control that is beyond reproach. Excellent Boogie/Triaxis tone on those peak middle albums as well. Easily one of the best guitarists in metal, period.
ESP M-III
These are my 'inspired by' Michael Romeo axes. The M-III is simply an early stock model with maple neck, Sinclair bridge, and upgraded Seymour Duncan TB-6. MJR was famously known for his metallic purple and white ESP M-IIs in the 90s, before going with Caparison guitars. Now I had owned the Caparison MJR, the problem with it is- it's difficult to play without position markers! Again this is a failing of the marketing side, and I adore MJR and his playing, however not everybody is a virtuoso. It could have been much more popular if only it catered to the majority of players who need/desire position markers when playing. It's a real pity, but I suppose in a way is a reflection of the band's dedication to their craft to the neglect of all else.
ESP 'Custom' M-II Figured Maple
Custom order with tight curly maple veneer on mahogany body, and dual EMG 81s. Note it only says 'custom' on the headstock. A striking testament to the skill and artistry of the ESP makers in the 90s.
